Hobonichi 2027 Preview Days 25–31
- Going to do a more thorough look-through closer to the 1 October release date since I'm wanting the One Piece Hon (which releases later) this year.
- Slightly interested in this Pickles version but that's about it lol.
Day 27: A look at the Classic Weeks series
- Got to say I really love the Weeks' weekly calendar + memo layout. Anyway, yet another year where I have too many designs I'm interested in but not enough uses.
- Current short list: Moomin At the Table (themed, Jan-only); V&A Bow Tie; Hiroko Kubota; Puppet Sunsun (but I only need three)
- Only keen on the Natal Design small pouch, but the PVC exterior worries me.
Looks like this is the year they stop including the pencil board with the Hon and start selling it separately. And is it just me or did they scale down the Hon line-up!?
Curiously unmoved by this but it probably just needs to come in a colour I like!? I wouldn't mind that Suica exclusive one...which I can't get.
- This punch looks interesting too...but how much will I use it!?
- And of course, the Weeksday calendar which I'm always interested in but missed out on last year.
Day 31: Hobonichi Factory Tour Video Interview (Part 1) (Part 2)
While most standard planners have around 160 pages, the Hobonichi Techo Cousin has over 500. It takes more time and effort to bind up, as it is essentially like binding three planners into one.
The step called spine wrapping, where the spine of the book is reinforced, is done once for many planners, but we do it twice for the Hobonichi Techo.
First of all, the paper is so thin and light that it’s hard to keep the pages together during the binding. And since paper is a natural material, it expands and contracts with the changes in humidity. Tomoe River paper, being as thin as it is, is especially sensitive to that.
Which means the paper’s condition varies with the seasons and weather.
Rather than spot-checking some samples, we inspect every single one, checking for issues such as lifting spine tape or scratches on the cover.
Oh man. Didn't think I could love my Cousin more but I think now I do.
And so, this wraps up this year's Hobonichi preview. Think I wasn't as hyped as some years past, but I had quite a bit of fun too.
